Seasonal Tricks To Sell Your Home
Our focus this month is on curb appeal. When Googling ‘Curb Appeal’ you get about 17,900,000 results (as of May 9, 2014)! There is a lot written about curb appeal and the reason is because it is so important! First impressions are lasting ones. The trick is to appeal to many buyers - in any season.
Winter Tricks
If you are selling your home in winter, ensure that the driveway and sidewalks are shoveled. If it is around Christmas time, make sure your lights and decorations are not overdone. A front yard completely full of inflatable snowmen and Santa – say it with me, “No”.A great way for your home to stand out is to have your front door in a great colour (read our post about front doors here). A red door definitely stands out (but not to be used on every home). That being said, a little bit of red will help warm things up.As there is less daylight in the winter, ensure that your outdoor lights have been updated/modernized and have working light bulbs.
Spring Trick
Spring can actually be a tricky time to work on your curb appeal. It's not necessarily warm enough for anything to grow yet for many, the snow is melting and leaving things looking a little rough. Ensure that you remove any winter/Christmas decorations (and yes, I am writing this in as I have seen my fair share of decorations being left out WAY past the Christmas holiday season). One easy way to help with the curb appeal is to ensure flowerbeds have been cleared. If you can, power rake the grass to get rid of all the dead grass.
Summer Tricks
The sun is shining, the weather is warm (and hot). It will be important to ensure your lawn is watered and looking in great shape. Nothing looks worse than weedy, brown grass. One way to add a splash of color that is relatively inexpensive, is to add flowers. If you have room, creating a nice border along the side of a sidewalk turns a ho-hum looking yard to a WOW yard. Flowerpots are also a great way to add colour without having to create new flowerbeds.
Fall Tricks
Fall can be a very beautiful time of year. Fall also happens to be a season with more yard maintenance when you are trying to sell your home. If you have trees, make sure leaves are raked frequently. Having a yard full of leaves will scream 'way too much work'. Make sure to go through your flower gardens and trim away dead flowers and tidy up the beds. One way to spruce things up it to utilize your summer flowerpots to continue to add colour that will attract and catch the eye of a potential buyer.
It's unfortunate, but people make judgments all the time. You know the saying, “Don't judge a book by its cover”? Think of your home this way: the outside of your home is your book jacket. Would you pick it up and buy it?
