Design Inspiration | Week 6 One Room Challenge™ DIY project

We are officially in Week 6 of the One Room Challenge™ and today, we're talking design inspiration. Typically, this is when we are ready to present our final spaces however with Covid, the challenge has been extended for two additional weeks.

If you are new to my blog, you can read all about the past weeks here:

The One Room Challenge™

The One Room Challenge™ is in its nineteenth season and is a widely anticipated biannual event. Every April and October the challenge begins. Twenty design influencers are selected to take the challenge, as Featured Designers, and transform a space. Every week, the designers document their process while sharing their sources and professional advice over eight weekly posts. You can see all of the featured designers here.

The ORC™ is also open to anyone with a blog or Instagram account to be a Guest Participant by linking their own room transformations up during the weeks. Each Thursday, we all post our projects. This year, I have met many new enthusiasts who are doing some amazing work!

As always, we thank Better Homes and Gardens who is the official media sponsor.

Design Inspiration

Design inspiration comes in many different shapes and sizes and can come from anywhere.

At times, we may see one piece of art that we will use to bring together an entire space. That art will dictate the colours we select for that space.

'Love Birds' by one of our favourite Maui artists: Sherri Reeve. We have two pieces of her artwork in our primary bedroom that were the inspiration for our space.

Other times, we look at inspirational photos of entire spaces. There may be a photo where our clients love the look of beams, or they are in love with green cabinets, etc. There is typically something that our clients are drawn to when they show us inspirational photos.

Travel is often a source of inspiration. When we experience different cultures, there can be certain elements that resonate with a person.

For the One Room Challenge™ we happened to use some design inspiration to add to our 61 square foot balcony projects. Our design inspiration came from Kelly Wearstler.

For those of you who do not know who Kelly Wearstler is, she is an Interior Designer based out of Los Angles. Kelly has many accolades including work in the residential, hospitality, commercial and retail fields. Her lifestyle brand includes furniture, lighting, decor, rugs, fabric and wallpaper, to name a few!

Inspiration

As you may have read in last week's blog, Debra is assisting me with the 'fluff and stuff' for this project. Debra had the fantastic idea to use Kelly's Linden Table Lamp as inspiration for a DIY project.

Our DIY Project

In using the above table lamp as inspiration, Debra created the following:

Really Simple to Make

  1. Select a vase of any shape and size. This may be one you already have or one you purchase.
  2. Use a ruler to measure your vertical lines equal distance apart.

3. Glue on cedar balls that are equally distant and symmetrical

5. Add in some greenery, leave it empty or... The sky is the limit as to what you can add to these and where to use these.

Any shape and style of vase works!

I just love these inspired vases that Debra made for our project! Just think of all the fun you can have with colours, shapes, and sizes! Below, I've rounded up the materials you will need if you wish to make your own. I hope you find it helpful!

Next week, I'm going to give you a little peak at how we're lighting up the balcony. I hope you'll join me.
