Decorating around a black palette | Week 5 ORC

We are in Week 5 of the One Room Challenge™ and this week, I'm giving you a little peek at some of the colours I am adding to go with our black palette.

For those of you who are new to following along, I am designing and decorating my daughter's 61 sq ft balcony. You can read all about our plans here. Click on the image to read more.

The One Room Challenge™

The One Room Challenge™, that is in its nineteenth season, is a widely anticipated biannual event every April and October. Each round, twenty design influencers are selected to take the challenge, as Featured Designers, and transform a space. Every week, the designers document their process while sharing their sources and professional advice over eight weekly posts. You can see the featured designers here.

The ORC is also open to anyone with a blog or Instagram account to be a Guest Participant by linking their own room transformations up during the weeks. Each Thursday, the internet and social media are flooded with interior design inspiration, ideas, and encouragement. If you have a minute, go and check out the many great projects!

Once again, we thank Better Homes and Gardens who is the official media sponsor.

The Black Palette

If you have been following along, you will know that my daughter really doesn't love a lot of colour. Her preferences are black and/or grey. When I decorated her first apartment, she was open to a little colour. As such, she has a blue sofa along with some rose coloured accents.

For her balcony, although her floor is grey and her outdoor furniture is black (with black cushions), she is giving me full reign on the decorating part. She is fully aware this will involve colour!

Toss Cushions

When it comes to working with a black palette, the sky really is the limit! When your base is a dark base, it allows for a variety of options.

Adding in some colourful toss cushions is a very easy way to add in those pops of colour. When we decided to go with the 'stock' furniture, I knew Abby would want to use the black cushions vs the red ones. As such, I spotted these colourful toss cushions (see above) and knew they would pop on the black cushions. I quickly texted her to ask and I was good to go! Phew...step one to adding in some colour to our black palette!

Some additional toss cushions with colour

I have enlisted the help or Debra Rubert to assist with gathering up and shopping for the 'fluff and stuff' for this project. I love bringing in Debra to look after all of our decorating projects as she is SO resourceful! While I hate shopping for the fluff and stuff (when I have a budget), she loves it and finds the BEST items. The above photo illustrates some awesome finds that Debra found!

Accent Furniture

In designing this small space, I was on the hunt for a small side table for the chair. Since Abby loves the beach, I knew this coastal colour would work. When I spotted this perfectly sized table, I knew it needed to be added to the mix!

Outdoor Area Rug

Last week I gave you a little sneak peek into the outdoor area rug. Debra and her resourcefulness found the perfectly sized and wonderfully coloured outdoor area rug!

Pulling it All Together

Since we have a black palette, for the most part, all of the accent colours are vibrant and colourful. Here is a little sneak peek at how it's all coming together.

Next Week

This wouldn't be a One Room Challenge™ without a little DIY project! Next week, I'll be showing you our little DIY project to add just a little bit more to our 61 sq ft space. I hope you'll join me.
