preparing for a kitchen makeover
Last week, I wrote about how we are getting ready for an ensuite makeover. This week, we’d like to share how we are getting ready for a kitchen make-over project that we’ll be starting in early July.
As Is
With all of our renovation projects, we start with the ‘As Is’. What the space looks like now, and what are the pros and cons of the space. What is working? What is not working? What are the dreams of the space?
Design Plan Options
When we create design options, we always like to have one plan be the most budget friendly plan with minimal changes. We call these plans an ‘R & R’ (remove and replace). These plans always give our clients a sense of what the project is going to cost to do the bare minimum. For both plans, we are working with the existing flooring.
Design Plan 1: R & R
For this project, we created an R & R plan which meant keeping the corner pantry. This plan includes a few changes other than R & R. Due to the smaller size kitchen and the lack of storage, we created our first plan to include:
an OTR (over the range microwave).
removal of the stub wall to allow for the counter to flow over the wall.
add in additional cabinets to the back of the island.
DESIGN PLAN 2: REMOVAL OF THE PANTRY
For this design plan, and for many kitchens like the layout of this one, we have designed a plan to remove the pantry. While most think that a pantry is a great storage area, they truly have so much wasted space (in my personal opinion).
For this design plan, we created the following:
an OTR (over the range microwave)
removal of the pantry
addition of 2 large tall cabinets
removal of the stub wall to allow for the counter to flow over the wall.
additional cabinets at the back of the island
We just had our cabinet maker do his final measurement today and there may be some tweaks and minor adjustments, but the removal of the pantry is the plan we are going with.
While we are also having this entire home painted, and updating two out of the three bathrooms. We look forward to starting this one in early July!
