Master Bedroom Retreat

I have finally started taking pictures of my home renovation and while there is still some decorating to do, I thought I would start with the master bedroom. When I was planning our home renovation project, I knew that our master bedroom needed a major refresh! Seriously, we had our bedroom furniture that we bought when we were married (23 years ago) and it desperately needed to go.I planned out our bedroom like I would plan out any of my clients. This first thing I decided was the vision for the room. My vision was pretty simple: a space that reflects peace and calm. And for the record, I pretty much had carte blanche when it came to our bedroom. All my hubby cared about was that there was a bed to sleep on and a TV to watch his sports updates (and yes – there is a TV in our master bedroom). Hey – a marriage is give and take after all.Master bedroom retreat

Master Bedroom Retreat: Furniture

Colour

It’s no shocker that I love white. When looking at new furniture, I knew that I was going to get white or some kind of off-white furniture. First of all, I'm not personally a huge fan of dark furniture (there is so much dust where we live) and I find it’s a nightmare to keep clean. It’s unbelievable how white furniture can hide the dust!

Functional

I always look at function over pretty. In our master bedroom I knew that my vision was peace and calm. In keeping with that vision, I did not want to clutter up our room with large furniture. With our old furniture we had a dresser, an armoire (tall boy) and two nightstands. When I packed up the armoire, I was amazed that we really didn't need it. We basically had a large piece of furniture that was pretty much useless. Lets just say I did not shed a tear when that furniture left our room. With our new furniture I decided to go with one chest of drawers and two nightstands. Oh how our room looks so much bigger with less furniture.Master Bedroom Retreat5I went with a footboard that also has two drawers (one for me and one for my hubby). With the chest of drawers and two additional drawers in the footboard, we have more than enough room.Master Bedroom Retreat4

Wall Colour

Part of my vision of peace and calm is created by the perfect wall colour. After going back and forth (and back and forth a million times), I landed on using Benjamin Moore Sea Salt. I already knew our furniture was going to be white and I already had our bedding so BM Sea Salt was the perfect colour to give me the peace and calm feeling. I wasn’t surprised to find out that I had indeed picked a premium colour that only came in the Aura line of Benjamin Moore paint (the rest of my home was painted with the Regal line). I guess you can say I have great taste ;)

Bedding

I started decorating our bedroom by choosing out our bedding. As you may know I'm a total beach girl at heart. How I came to be born and live my entire life in a prairie province is beyond me. I found this great coverlet at Target when they were going out of business. When I saw the blue I knew that was IT. Knowing that I didn't want our bedroom to look like a baby nursery (with the blue), I chose coral to be my accent colour. The throw pillows I also snagged at the Target close-out sale (don't get me started on all the mistakes this company made!)  Still disappointed as Nate Berkus has such a great line featured in Target.Master Bedroom Retreat3

Bed Sheets

I am in love with my bed sheets. They are from Cariloha that we bought when we were in Maui this past spring. I’m really not a snob so don’t get me wrong when I rave about these bed sheets. Of course I bought white (they just scream crisp and clean).  The one thing I have come to truly gain appreciation for is quality bedding –specifically bed sheets and towels. I treat bed sheets and towels like underwear – they touch your skin every day so if I'm going to splurge, it’s going to be on those items!  And yes, we bought the towels too (in white).  Heavenly!master bedroom retreat

Lighting

I am a big reader of books and I often will go to bed early to read. I knew I didn't want ugly reading lamps for our bedside tables. One splurge I made was getting custom lamps. I had these lamps colour matched to match the colour of the coral in my toss cushions. I think they add the pop of colour that is needed with this room while providing more than enough light to read.Master Bedroom Retreat1Although I still need to finish decorating (there are a few walls that are still bare and the right item has not entered my life yet), I am in absolute love with our master bedroom. Every night when I walk into the bedroom and get ready to go to bed, I get this feeling. That feeling of, “Ahhhhh”. That feeling is the exact feeling I was going for. Peace and calm washes over me every single day I walk into my bedroom.Just an aside note: the bed is made every single day. Why do I feel I need to say that? Because it goes back to my vision. If I walked into my room and the bed was in disarray, I would not be feeling the “ahhhh’ feeling. The next stop on my renovation project is going to be the kitchen. It should be ready for professional photos so stay tuned to see that transformation next week!  A little sneak peak...Kitchen RenovationSheri Bruneau Get It Together
