Bottoms Up: Adding a dedicated beverage station to your kitchen
I don't know about you, but I love a good cup of coffee every morning. There is nothing like heading to the kitchen, making my way to the dedicated beverage station, and brewing a cup of coffee to start the day.
While we have designed a few dedicated beverage stations in kitchens, there are ways to create one in your own home.
Dedicated Beverage Station: Built In
If you are a coffee lover like myself, or perhaps you prefer to dabble in drink mixology, you may want to consider building in a dedicated beverage station when you are designing a new kitchen for yourself. What are some things to keep in mind?
- How much room will you require for all of your goodies? Take stock of what your would place in your dedicated beverage area.
- Are there appliances that you need in this area? A Kurig is a great example of something that sits quite high and wide.
- What is the plan for the electrical? Will you require an outlet (s) for some of your items to work?
- Will your beverage station be in a closed cabinet or open area?
These are just a few questions to consider when planning out a dedicated, built-in, beverage station.
For my clients, we took many months to plan out their kitchen so it was just right for them. Part of the planning was to created a dedicated beverage station. This station was going to not only house items for coffee, but it was also going to be the main floor bar area as well.
As you may be able to see, there is a LOT of planning when it comes to incorporating this into your new kitchen design. In the image above, the cabinet on the far right is the dedicated beverage area. Below, you will see how it all turned out.

Built In Considerations
For my clients, we needed to ensure a number of items.
- We wanted to have an electrical outlet inside the cabinet. By electrical code, the power needs to be tripped once the doors are closed. Our electricians needed to know that in order to properly install the correct device.
- We also needed to ensure the counter was one that could withstand wetness. No matter how careful we are, there will inevitably be someone who will spill or create a little, wet mess. We chose quartz to be the material we used for this cabinet.
- The measuring of the appliances were taken. Nothing worse than having a built-in cabinet and the shelving is not the correct height. While the glass shelves are adjustable, we wanted to ensure that the bottom row had plenty of head space (room).

Beverage Stations - Create them yourself
While we all can not renovate our kitchens, there are ways to create a dedicated beverage station. One nice thing about a non-built in beverage station is that it is relocatable. You can move it to any room, or it can come with you when it is time to move.
Repurpose
Artsy Chick Rule took a bedroom dresser and repainted it with chalkboard paint to create their dedicated beverage station.
Combine
This cute station looks like they've built a simple book shelf (possibly IKEA), a coffee cup tree, and of course, my ever-loving tiered tray!
Bar Cart
A good ol' bar cart is so user friendly it be used for a variety of things. Coffee/Tea in the morning, wine and whiskey at night?
