BEFORE A MOVE - BOX CHOICES

When getting ready to move, it is important that you select the correct containers that will be housing or storing your items.  While it is affordable to get boxes from your local grocery store, they may not always the best to use for all of your items.  So what are your moving box options?

Cardboard Boxes

Cardboard boxes to be the most well known and 'traditional'.  When using moving boxes, there are some things to keep in mind.  First of all, knowing what size of box to use is really important.  According to boxshop.ca:"Box measurements always correspond to the inner dimensions of the box. This is done to ensure a snug and protective fit around your item(s)."

Boxes are measured according to their inside dimensions. That means that I a box is16 x 12 x 12", you are able to fit an itemthat is 16 x 12 x 12" inside that box.Boxes are always measured:Length x Width x Height (Depth)Dimensions are expressed in inches.

The following article, All About Moving Boxes offers information on size of boxes as well as the approximate weight per box that is ideal.  A GREAT resource.Finding gently used boxes on Kijij or Craigslist is also an option and definitely an affordable way to go.

Frog BoxesReusable Plastic Moving Boxes

Eco-Friendly, rentable reusable plastic moving boxes is becoming more and more popular.  Frog Box and Eco Box are companies that offer a pretty cool concept with a 3-step process:

  1. Delivery of the boxes.
  2. You pack and move.
  3. They will come and pick up the boxes.

It's a simple as that!  I have personally used plastic moving boxes for clients and they definitely have their advantages.

How Do I Know What Is Right For Me?

Most likely, you may find yourself in a situation where you don't just go with on choice.  There are a few things you can ask yourself before making a decision:

  1. Do I plan on unpacking everything right away?  If your answer is "No", then the rentable plastic reusable moving boxes would not be a good choice as you would be paying for those boxes to sit and not be unpacked.
  2. Do I want to take the time to recycle all of the cardboard boxes after a move?  If your answer is 'No', then using the rentable reusable plastic moving boxes would be a good choice.

There is no rule on what you need to use.  We have had situations where we have had both the rentable, reusable bins and cardboard boxes.  Each situation is unique in its own way.The end goal is to have your items delivered to your new destination in one piece and with no damage.  The more care and attention you pay to packing will result in a smooth unpack!
