Angled island and corner pantry | What are our kitchen options?
Does an angled island and corner pantry describe your current kitchen layout? For us, we see this kind of kitchen design a lot. This week, I'm breaking down some options we presented to clients for updating their kitchen.
Renovation Discovery Session
When we get a phone call or email asking about our services, we get excited about the potential to help another family. Since our phone has been ringing off the hook, here is a quick glance at how we work with our clients for renovation and remodel projects.
When we met our clients over zoom, we had a good chance to see what their current situation was. As they virtually walked us through their space, it was evident that their current kitchen layout was a familiar one we deal with - a lot!
When our proposal was sent to our clients, they accepted it and we began our process. We met our clients in person (socially distancing of course and wearing our masks) and carried out a site measure of their space. Then, we got to work with creating options.
Options for this kitchen
When looking at investments for a remodel and renovation, we like to provide as many options for our clients as we can. As such, we came up with three options for this family.
Most Budget Friendly
This design option keeps the corner pantry (so no ceiling work needed), but reconfigures the refrigerator wall and the island. A few other main features for this plan:
- keep the existing cabinets on the stove wall and add in upper cabinets to take to the ceiling
- install all new cabinet fronts
- exterior colour for the cabinets to be one colour
- new colour for the island
- create a new lighting plan
- reface the 3-way fireplace to include the entire wall behind the fireplace
Taking out the corner pantry option 1
We provided our clients with the option to remove the corner pantry to show how their kitchen would look without that space.
I created two options for taking out the corner pantry. This design plan has no seating at the island. Typically our clients wish to have seating at the island however for this plan, with the 3-way fireplace separating the spaces, I wanted to show the potential of a new island. A few of the finer details include:
- separate the new pantry from the fridge to allow for good traffic flow and no traffic jams in the kitchen.
- all new cabinets to include going to the ceiling
- move the range and hood fan down towards the eating area to centre it on this space.
- create a feature with the 3-way fireplace
Taking out the corner pantry option 2
For this option, I wanted to showcase some more potential. This plan incorporates
- adding in upper glass cabinets
- create seating at the island
- include a space for cookbooks
Next Steps
Now that my clients have some options, they are going to digest the options and then provide me feedback for any changes they would like to see. There may be parts of one plan, and parts of another plan they wish to see.
While they are digesting the plans, we are going to have a trade day to obtain quotes for the work on these plans. Part of this project also includes all new flooring for the home (new baseboards, casings, etc.). We will then discuss the pricing for the plans and see which road my clients wish to take.

Kitchen Island Must Haves
While I tend to love clean, flat surfaces, when you have a large island, there is always room for a little bit of decor. There are three essentials that I love using:
- flowers and a vase
- a candle
- tray
