3 Reasons That Are Keeping You From Getting It Together
I can come up with a handful of reasons to skip exercising.
- I'm too tired.
- It's been a long day.
- I'll do it tomorrow.
And the reasons can go on and on. I can actually convince myself to skip exercising every single day! Really - I can come up with some doozies! What I've learned to do is have exercise 'buddies'. When it comes to Wednesday nights and going to Zumba at 8:00 pm (when I actually feel like getting into my jammies), I have four other ladies I have to answer to if I don't make it. It's my accountability. And quite honestly, when I get there and we laugh and dance and have a great time, I really do feel so much better! When it comes to being disorganized, I typically find there are three common reasons that keep people from getting it together.
Embarrassment
Have you ever been embarrassed about a room in your home? Maybe it’s more than one room? Perhaps you are embarrassed about the state of your home? Maybe it’s the fact that you feel embarrassed that you can’t keep up? Whatever the reasons are, if you don’t address the issue, it’s not going to go away on its own.In my own home, I am extremely embarrassed with our flooring. We built our home thirteen years ago and our flooring is in dire need of being replaced. When we moved in I had a very strict rule about only eating in the kitchen. As my family aged and our children became teens, the strict rule flew out the door and now everyone (except me – the rule follower) seems to be eating in every room possible! My husband, on the other hand, sees nothing wrong with our flooring. Hell, he thinks we have at least thirteen more years with our carpet. I’ll just say that is not going to be happening.I came across a really great article called, “10 Real Ways to Overcome Embarrassment” written by Therese Borchard. She is a great writer who provides some really helpful ways to overcome those embarrassing moments. As I always say to potential clients, “I don’t judge.” I have embarrassments too and I know how busy life can get. What I do encourage is that we tackle the situation so that you no longer feel embarrassed!
Lack of Funds
The money tree seems to lack funds all – the – time!
I’m going to be honest with this one, and I may get some backlash from it, but I have to be honest: if individuals and families would stop wasting money on ‘stuff’, there would be plenty of ‘extra’ money. Too many times I will walk into a situation where it is full of ‘stuff’. And by ‘stuff’, I mean STUFF. Whether it is money wasted on cheap items (items that will break easily – I’m a firm believer of you pay for what you get), items that you bought because they were on sale and you really didn’t need them, items that were too good to pass up on). It’s all stuff. Stuff you don’t need, stuff you likely won’t and don’t use. STUFF – STUFF – STUFF!Here’s my tip to you: stop it!
- Before you head out, make a list of what you need.
- Don’t get caught up in a sale (because there will be another one next week!)
- Track your spending. This is a great way to see where all of the money is going.
Don’t Know Where to Start
When you are faced with a particular space that is full of stuff, it’s no wonder you wouldn’t know where to start. I sometimes go into consultations and wonder that myself (depending on the situation and how full the particular space is) – so I totally get it! The trick is to have an action plan and a timeline so that you can mentally prepare to get it done. Take that action plan and timeline and book yourself some time (maybe it’s only 30 minutes a day or an hour a week). Whatever works for you – but plan to get the work done. The good news is that there are individuals and companies (like mine) that can help you. We can help you with creating a plan and timeline and we can also help you with getting the work done. You can also enlist the help of friends too. Whatever it takes! Nothing is impossible.
As we head into spring, and hopefully warmer days, take some time to reflect if any of the above have been reasons for not getting it together in your home. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
