Organizing

When it comes to spring organizing a bedroom, ensure you understand what your vision is for your room.  It’s impossible to start the organizing process unless  you know what you want FOR your room.Your vision for your room might be to have it

  • romantic?
  • peaceful?
  • serene?
  • calming?

You may also require spaces for various functions in your room.  For example, I love to read so therefore, I need a spot for reading (good lighting for sure)!  I love how this room has two different lamps (which looks perfect).

Once you have your vision for your room figured out, then you can start to clean and organize.  Anything that does not fit in with your vision needs to be removed.  For example, I have never been a fan of having kids toys in the bedroom.  I have always been a firm believer that a bedroom is for sleeping and calming the brain – not for revving it up to play.  It doesn’t mean that my thinking is the right way, it’s just my thinking if firmly aligned with the vision I have for a bedroom.I get asked a lot about having a T.V. in the bedroom.  I don't believe there is a right or wrong answer to this.  I actually happen to have a T.V. in our bedroom.  I often come into the bedroom to watch what I want (without the constant changing of channels that often occurs when the hubby has the controls) and sit on a comfy bed!   It’s like my little slice of T.V. heaven where I get to relax and watch a show.  It fits with my vision for a bedroom. When you are unsure if something should or shouldn't be in a bedroom, go back to the vision YOU created for that space.  If it doesn't fit in with the vision, then it needs to be removed.

Cleaning

As many of you know, I LOVE a clean house, but really dislike cleaning my house (ok – I hate it).  So along the way, I have tried to find the most efficient way to cleaning (that’s code for saying I’m lazy and want to do the least amount of work to clean).  Every week my house gets dusted, vacuumed, floors washed, bathrooms done, etc.   Every spring, I have followed the Real Simple guide to cleaning a bedroom.

Tips taken from Real Simple:

Every Day

  • Make the bed (two minutes)
  • Fold or hang clothing and put away jewelry (four minutes)
  • Straighten out the night-table surface (30 seconds)

Every Week

  • Change the sheets (five minutes)
  • Dust all surfaces ― including electronics, books, picture frames, windowsills and ledges, and tops of door frames ― and remove all cobwebs (10 minutes)
  • Dust or mop the floors or vacuum the carpeting (five minutes)
  • Throw out old magazines (one minute)
  • Wipe the switch plates, doorknobs, and doorjambs (one minute)
  • Wipe and disinfect the telephone (30 seconds)
  • Empty the wastebasket (20 seconds)
  • Vacuum the heating and air-conditioning vents and the inside of the closet (three minutes)

Every Season

  • Wash the insides of the windows (15 minutes)
  • Strip the bed and flip the mattress (five minutes)
  • Launder the mattress pad and dust ruffle

I also include wiping the baseboards, as ours seem to get so dusty!

Make Your Bed Daily

Part of keeping a clean and organized room is establishing routines.  Real Simple includes 3 in their ‘Every Day’ routines.I grew up in a house where making the bed was NOT an option.  We all did it (and still do to this day).  I came across this article, “How Making You Bed Every Morning Can Improve Your Life ” It provides 5 points why you should make your bed every morning.   I especially love #5 – It leads to other good habits.Make your bed daily
