Securing Your Home for a Holiday

Follow my blog with BloglovinSecuring your home for a holiday, whether it be during the summer or any other time of the year, is one of the most important jobs you can do before you take off. Here are 5 tips to ensuring you come home to your home in one piece.Social MediaThis is one of the biggest mistakes you can make! Whether you realize this or not, posting a status update on Facebook, Twitter, Google +, or other Social Media sites is simply advertising that your home will be empty and ready for the taking. If you want to let everyone know what a great holiday you had, post updates AFTER you have gotten home.Outside LightingA great way to fend off potential break-ins is to have motion activated lights. Having lights come on by the garage, front entrance as well as the sides of your home may very well scare off any potential break-ins. Using motion sensor lights will also help with your energy bill.Look Lived InThis can be achieved by having a neighbour or close friend come over and check your home. Have them pick up any flyers, mail, etc. If you are away for an extended period of time, have them cut and water the grass.Lock It UpThis may sound silly, as most of us do check the door we walk out of. However, ensuring everything is locked up is important. Check all doors as well as windows! If you do all the doors and windows the night before (except for the door you will leave), this will save you from rushing around the day of departure.Secure ValuablesThis can be done with an in-home safe or a safety deposit box with a bank. Expensive jewelery and/or important papers and documents should be secured. If you are using an in-home safe, ensure that it is fire proof. We all know that going on vacation is a time to relax, unwind and enjoy. Take the necessary steps before you go to ensure you come home and are able to enjoy your home the way you left it!
