Some of my renovation projects

As I write this I'm staring at 13 renovation project files that are either just getting starting and in the planning stages, are in full swing, or are just about completed.  I think the best part of my job is that although everyone is unique, I follow the same procedures with any project.  For someone like me who thrives on structure and sees what happens when one is planned, the end result is always rewarding.  So what's going on in my world?  Here are a few renovation projects I am currently working on.

Renovation Projects In the Planning Stages

Entire Home Renovation

Planning a renovation for your entire home requires a lot of logistics and planning.  I am such a huge believer of planning ahead, and being proactive rather than reactive.  This past week I had the pleasure to meet a young family that is looking to get a lot done in their home.  On the scope of their wish list is the following:

Main Floor Renovation

  • install all new flooring
  • install all new baseboards and casings
  • entire kitchen renovation
  • powder room refresh (new vanity, new paint, lighting)
  • family room refresh (new paint, work with existing built-ins, new furniture)
  • dining room refresh (new paint)
  • mud room/laundry room (move washer and dryer downstairs, redesign for maximum function)

Basement Renovation

  • finish the entire basement (currently it is untouched) including a bedroom, laundry room, storage room and bathroom.

Upstairs Renovation

  • replacing flooring on stairs and possibly upstairs
  • open up the walls leading up the stairs and replace with railing

It's a huge project that is in the preliminary stages of planning.  I'll be meeting with my cabinet company this week to go over the plan for the kitchen as that is where we are going to start (since the basement is unfinished right now it will make moving the plumbing easier).  As I come up with ideas, I'm always thinking of function first and then pretty.  But speaking of pretty, here are a few that I think are drop dead gorgeous! And yes, they are all white or a version of white (cream).renovation projects

Entire Home Refresh Renovation

My dear friends have successfully purchased a new home and are in full-swing to refresh it before they move in.  I spent time with them over the weekend to help choose new carpet for the basement, new carpet for the bedrooms, new paint for their kitchen cabinets, as well as all new paint for every space in their home. When looking at this kind of renovation project, it is imperative that I worked with the fixed elements that were not leaving the home.  While they are getting all new carpet, the main floor has hardwood and tile that is staying in the home.  The hardwood also flows up the stairs and into the hallway as well as bonus room.   Those hardwood floors are dictating every step we make.  Furthermore, all of the baseboards and casings will also be repainted as they will be matching the new cabinet colour.  While there is really no construction happening in this home, it is a huge project in getting the colours just right!  Painting of the cabinets start today so here are some 'before' picture of the home as it looks now.  Take notice of the flooring as that is the driving force in getting this home to flow from front to back AND be in one lane.  What do I mean by that?renovation projects

Pick A Lane

This home currently has a mixture of  warm and cool going on.  It is a gorgeous home however if you take a close look at the floor (as the tile is only in the front entrance), it is a warm floor which means this home falls in the cream foundation palette.  If you look at the baseboards, they are very white (not cream).  So while the white looks ok with the tile, it looks horrible against the flooring.  Once you place the right cream colour against the flooring you can clearly see that cream is a much better choice (thus I use the word horrible for describing the white).  It's great to have the large samples that I have as it makes it very clear to the homeowner what you are talking about and they can clearly see what looks right and what looks just so-so.  And just so you know, there are roughly 140 different kinds of whites (blue whites, true whites, off whites and creams/ivory).  It is really easy to pick the wrong white!renovation projectsThe kitchen is currently a bleached look and that is going to change today!  I can hardly wait.  It's not really clear in this picture, but the walls right now are yellow.  I love yellow, but this is the wrong yellow!  In person, the walls really clash with the floors (orange and yellow - ugh!).  Here is the entire home NEW pallet for this family that will give them the updated look they desire. renovation projects  renovation projects renovation projectsI'll be posting some updated photos on my Facebook page throughout the week on this project.  Can't wait to see the entire home all done!  Once this project is done, I'll go into more detail as to why I chose certain colours for each room (the method behind my madness).Sheri Bruneau Get It Together
