Painting Vinyl Siding

Did you know that painting your vinyl siding is actually an option to change your exterior colour of your home?  In the past, painting vinyl siding was an option IF you painted it the same colour or IF you painted it lighter.  Well - how times have changed!

When I was at my local Sherwin Williams store getting my new interior fan deck, I was lucky enough to see their new Vinyslafe™ Colors brochure.  Of course, if it has to do with paint changes, I'm all over it!  I can not believe how many colour choices there are.  Check it out!painting vinyl siding

Painting Vinyl Siding: Details

In the past, if you painted vinyl siding darker, you most likely would have had blistering and buckling caused by the sun’s heat. Due to Sherwin-Williams® VinylSafe™ Color Technology, that is no longer an issue.  This exterior paint also hides nail and putty marks so you will able to totally transform your home! There are over 100 popular colour options in their new VinylSafe™ palette!  Can you tell how excited I am???  No longer do you need to be limited to selections AND painting your vinyl siding is truly an option for homeowners who wish to change the look of their exterior of their home.

Painting Vinyl Siding: Tips

As excited as I am with Sherwin Williams Vinysafe™ Color technology, I also feel it's important to give some tips when looking at choosing exterior colours.  Please, please, don't just randomly pick a colour because you like it.

Painting Vinyl Siding: Tip 1

When choosing a new vinyl siding paint, it is IMPERATIVE that you relate your colour to your fixed elements that are not changing.  Fixed elements you say - what are those?  Things such as:

  • stone work
  • brick work
  • roof colour
  • window frames
  • soffits
  • gutters and downspouts
  • fascia boards
  • trim
  • decks and railings
  • front door

Failing to take all of the above into consideration could lead to a colossal mistake with your colour choice!painting vinyl sidingThis image was posted in a private group I belong to so I am unable to provide the link.  It is very clear in this image that no consideration was taken to the stone and the undertone of the stone work on this home.  You definitely have the brown, Tuscan trend mixing with the grey trend - all on one house.  Yikes!  And by the way, this is a new build so lucky for the new homeowner - the siding can be painted!

Painting Vinyl Siding: Tip 2

When choosing a new exterior colour, it is important to take your neighbours into consideration.  You might be thinking - why.  Why do I need to take my neighbours into consideration? I'll tell you.  If you don't, you may face the risk of your home sticking out like a very sore thumb!  Whether you like it or not, your home is most likely part of a neighbourhood.  Your neighbourhood may also have strict architectural controls.  That is something you need to investigate before solidifying a new colour.painting vinyl siding

I took this shot as I had to pass this house while working on a renovation project.  All I can say is, 'WOWZERS!".  It truly sticks out like a sore thumb.

Painting Vinyl Siding: A Picture Says a Thousand Words

I am an extremely visual person.  A picture says a thousand words.  Here are some homes, with vinyl siding, that I think have hit the mark.  Just so you know, they most likely have not had the vinyl siding painted however, it will give you a good idea of some spectacular colour combinations!painting vinyl siding
