Mid Century Vibe: From 1976 to 2020 Project Reveal
Our Mid Century Vibe project was complete just before we were hit with COVID- 19. While this project has been completed for quite some time, it was sure nice to be back in the home to take our final photos.
Background
When I found out that my clients were going to be moving from Ontario to Calgary, I was thrilled when they asked me to help them find a home for them. With the help of their real estate agent, Robin Spiers, we set out to find a home!
With the Mr. and Ms. were still back in Ontario, Robin and I started the hunt. We looked at many homes online based on the criteria we were given. We also viewed a few potential properties in person.
Each time we viewed a property, I would come up with potential renovations based on their wish list.
If my memory serves me correct, this home was sold before we could even make an offer. It was quickly evident that we would need to expand our search into other communities that were on the wish list and make quicker decisions.
The One
As homes were being bought at what seemed like record speed, there was a sense of urgency to find a property before it was swooped up by someone else.
On July 20, 2019, I received an email from my clients that they put an offer to purchase a home. This home was going to be 'The One'!
As Is
While the home that was purchased obviously had some work done to it throughout the years, the floor plan was not at all what my clients wished for.
As you can see, this floor plan was very 'traditional' with a formal living room and a formal dining room.
While the home was staged to sell, the fixed elements were dated. Here are a few of the before photos.

What you won't be able to see is that there was a hidden room off Bedroom One. It was kind-of like a little loft, but the slope of the bedroom ceiling made it...made it...well...just weird.
The Plan
While the home was a traditional home with many walls, my clients wish list was pretty extensive. As with every project, we planned out the design for this home checking off many boxes that were on the list. With some tweaks and changes, we landed on the following plan for the main floor and second story.
The Pretty
Once the physical design plan was decided on, it was time to look at the pretty! In my initial notes I made, the Ms. stated that she wanted a rustic, modern vibe. When we started the sourcing process, it was clear that we were most certainly not going to be going in that direction. What the Ms. was clearly drawn to was the Mid Century vibe of design.
The Construction
Since this home was built in 1976, we started off this project with some asbestos removal. Once that was remidiated by the pros, we were ready to get this show on the road.
And boy...there was a lot to do in our four month timeline! As you may see in our design plan, we planned to remove three walls on the main floor. The way this home was built, we were looking at having to install a beam to remove the three walls. The addition of a post vs a beam was not going to be an option for my clients.
The beam that we had engineered was by far, the largest one we have put in a residence. It was a 5 ply beam, 20" tall and 31' long! Look what we had to do to get it installed!
When these walls were removed and the funky room deleted from the second story, you could start to see how amazing this space was going to be!
Sweat Equity
While many times we look after the entire renovation project, this project was a tiny bit different. Ok - a lot different! The Mister has some super carpentry talent and wished to build all of the cabinets himself. He also wished to install the hardwood flooring and look after the cladding of the beam. By doing so, my clients were saving a significant amount in the budget.
I do wish to say there that I would only recommend that you take on this type of work if you truly have the skill set and the time. The Mr. worked with our timeline (he actually had the cabinets all done prior to what we required) and allowed us to continue to keep with our aggressive construction calendar. And I'm sure you can all agree that the Mr. certainly HAS the skill set!
The Mr. also took on the job of cladding the large beam. After I saw his craftsman ship, I seriously asked if he would come work with us!
The End Result
This project is truly one amazing project with a lot of wow factors! From what the house looked like when we got it, to how it looks today, I can safely say that we were able to bring the wishes of our clients to fruition.
While I was also able to source a lot of their furniture and help them decorate a bit, the Mr. and Ms. have done a beautiful job in finishing off their home.
Here is a glimpse of some before and after shots.
Close Ups
Before I show you a few close up,

It was so great to finally see my clients and hear how living through our Covid times have been in their new home. While they are unable to entertain their friends and family in their new home, they have had a gorgeous space to both work from home!
