Main Bath Refresh - One Room Challenge Week 1
I am so excited to be participating in the One Room Challenge this year and completing a main bath refresh. So what is the One Room Challenge™?
The One Room Challenge™, currently in its fourteenth season, is a widely anticipated biannual event every April and October. Each round, twenty design influencers are selected to take the challenge and transform a space. Every Thursday, the designers document their process while sharing their sources and professional advice over the six weekly posts.

Main Bath Refresh
I am going to be re-doing our main bathroom in my own home. This is our 'builder grade' main bath that we did not touch when we renovated the majority of our home 3 years ago. This bathroom is only used by our son (who will be graduating from College this December and will be moving back home). Since this space is for a young man, I've designed it with a more masculine feel (without being a man-cave). Here is what it currently looks like.
The Design
While everything is staying in the same spot (my goodness – we only have 6 weeks), there are going to be some major changes. Before I get to the specifics, here is the conceptual design for the main bath refresh.
Flooring
For this main bath refresh, I am going to go with a tile floor. Since this is a main bath, we’re not going to do a heated floor (come on, I love my son – but do I really love him that much to give him heated floors - LOL). When I saw this tile at Deerfoot Carpet and Flooring, I instantly feel in love with it. While it has pattern, it is subtle and not really in your face. This was the first decision I made! Vanity
I love floating vanities as I feel that they make a space feel larger. I also love drawers in a vanity as all of the space can get used. For our new vanity, we are going with the same width, however the configuration is changing greatly. As I am also going with a faucet that will be coming out of the wall, we had to leave room for the plumbing so while the drawers look large, they are actually a bit smaller. For the colour of the vanity I chose Benjamin Moore Blue Note as I believe this is a strong, masculine colour.
Fixtures and Lighting
For this main bath refresh, the only person who will be using this will be our adult son. The majority of our metal in our home is chrome but I wanted to add in a metal for this space. As such, the fixtures are all a black matte. The pendant lights are also black matte with just a little touch of chrome (to tie in the rest of the home).
Bath/Shower Tile
When we built our home I really wanted a one-piece tub. I didn’t want to worry about the grout issue in a bathroom. With our kids being adults, I don’t have that worry as I know it will be maintained. The floor tile has a strong pattern (even though the colour is subtle) however, it is still considered the ‘boss’ of this space. Since I need some supporting elements in this main bath refresh, I am choosing a simple 4X 16 subway tile. The jury is still out is how I'll have my tile setter lay the tiles! The grout that I’ll be using is a grey to go with the grey colour in the flooring.
