Imagine...you enter your home through the attached garage, the kids take their shoes and coats off and drop their backpacks. They run into the house leaving you wondering where the heck all this stuff is going to go!Enter my clients. Their boot room/laundry room was a duel functioning area that was a standard size. Not too big, not too small...with enough room for a washer and dryer and a closet. So what to do to redesign this space so that they could have a place for the backpacks, shoes, hats, mitts, and additional storage?

When dealing with a tight space, I think vertical. How can we expand this space for storage? Go up! When I found this image on Pinterest, I showed my clients to see if something like this design would interest them.

With a built-in look we were going for, the lower pull outs would be great for the kids while the upper cabinets would be great to store the laundry room supplies.
When we investigated this option, after looking at custom cabinets vs IKEA cabinets, the decision was to go with IKEA cabinets. Placing the washer and dryer on the cabinets was not going to be an option. So...back to the drawing board. With needing to keep the washer and dryer on the floor, I looked at a vertical option. With the help of Modus Enterprises (the IKEA installers), we came up with a plan. Here it is:
With this design, my clients would get a tall cabinet with two lower pull out drawers (one for each child). The upper part of the tall cabinet would be for my clients (mom and dad). The 3 sets of cabinets above the washer and dryer would house a variety of things including the laundry soap, detergent and other cleaning supplies. That's 6 upper cabinets that provide a crap-load of storage!
When my clients had all of the cupboards installed, they couldn't believe how much room they had gained. Storage is always at a premium and when you're stuck with a tighter space, the only place you can add space is to go up!
