Kitchen Renovations: What Are My Options?
When it comes to discussing a kitchen renovation, I like to give my clients as many options as I can. Now every client and every situation is different. There is always a budget to consider, the state the cabinets are in, as well as the functionality of the existing kitchen. So what exactly are your options for a kitchen renovation?
Kitchen Renovation: Painting the Cabinets
If you are happy with your current layout and your cabinets are in good condition, then painting your cabinets might be a really great choice.I use a professional painter to have cabinets painted as he will spray the cabinets so there are no brush strokes. In most cases, a fresh coat of paint can drastically change the look and feel of your kitchen.

My clients were very lucky in that we could keep their backsplash tile and their granite counters to pull everything together and make this work with their existing exotic cherry hardwood floors. In some instances, there may need more than just painting cabinets to get the look you desire. What you want to ensure is that:
- backsplash
- counters
- flooring
all work with your new colour for your cabinets. If you fail to keep all of those in mind, you are going to get a look of new cabinets with old counters and old floors and that is exactly what it will look like. The image below, although the cabinet colour is beautiful, does not work with the existing counters or floors. This is a great example of a clean vs dirty thing going on in this space.
Kitchen Renovation: Refacing your Cabinets
If you are happy with your current layout but your cabinets are in ok condition or they can not be painted, then refacing your cabinets might be a really great choice. Refacing means to take the existing doors off and replace them with new doors. This is a great way to get a new cabinet colour and a new door style (if that is what you are hoping for). Although this can entirely change the look of your kitchen, it is not always the most budget friendly as most clients will also want to change their counters and backsplash (which adds to the budget). The pro for going this route is you don't have to go through an entire 'gut' phase and demolition phase with this option.
Kitchen Renovations: Replacing Your Cabinets
If you are not happy with your current layout and/or you do not like your current cabinets, then a total replacing of your cabinets will be the way to go. This, by far, is my favourite as I get to take a space and redesign it for my clients. This option does take more time and definitely more money. Kitchen cabinets can take anywhere from 4-6 weeks to build, there would be a demolition involved (so messy, dusty work) and it would most certainly involve getting new counters, backsplash, sink, faucet and some times, new appliances.

The above image is what the kitchen currently looks like. We have talked about the options to update this kitchen including painting the solid oak cabinets. To give my clients an idea of what a brand new kitchen could look like, with all of their wishes, here is a rendering that I've designed:
The brand new kitchen includes the following:
- cabinets going to the ceiling (utilizing the vertical height)
- built in microwave
- additional pantry space with pull out pantry/microwave unit
- custom hood fan
- all base cabinets to have pull out drawers
- soft closing cabinets
- pull out spice racks (on either side of the stove)
- full glass cabinet (to house all of the glass ware)
- new floor
- new counters
- new backsplash
While this option will cost more (notice there is no more sunshine ceiling), it checks of absolutely everything on their wish list.
Kitchen Renovations
My clients actually have all three options to consider with their kitchen. Their cabinets are solid oak so they can be painted, we could get them refaced, or they could get an entirely new kitchen. Whatever decision they decide to go with, they will be getting new flooring, new counters, new backsplash, new appliances, new sink and new faucet.
I believe it's part of my job to educate my clients about all of their choices. I'm excited about all of the possibilities with this space and looking forward to giving my clients a dream kitchen - no matter which direction they choose to go.
