Designing A Dream Home

I am so lucky to be working with an amazing lady in designing a dream home for her and her husband.  I met Betty (her real name has been changed) at the Calgary Home + Design Show.  The minute Betty and I (and her daughter) started to talk, I knew we would be a good fit.  We had some good laughs, we felt immediately comfortable with each other, and we had a common love: Maui.Through our very short 15 minute meeting, Betty was able to let me know what her wishes were and what were important features that she wanted in her new dream home.  As this was going to be her and her husband's forever home, we talked about 'aging in place' as I would need to be take that into consideration with the design.  With aging in place, in addition to a list of wants and needs, here are a few items we discussed to incorporate into the plan:

  • Extra wide hallways
  • Minimum 36" doorways
  • A huge kitchen to house 8-10 people at once
  • A large hidden cold room off the garage (Betty can have up to 600 jars/cans at one time)
  • A Butler's pantry
  • Curbless shower
  • A indoor pizza oven
  • A separate office/den area (aka: the man cave), to name a few items on her list.

After a few follow up emails, and an initial plan was in place.  Betty and I met.  We talked about what she liked, what she would like changed, etc.  After a few more emails, a second version has been created.  Although Betty has not had a chance to give me feedback yet (she's on her way to Maui - lucky lady), I've decided to share a bit of what it's starting to look like.

An additional sink is requested in this pantry.

Front Entrance

A view from the front door.  All of the walls in the home are 10' tall however, the wall separating the kitchen and family room is only 8' tall (to allow natural light to flow from the front of the home to the back of the home).

Laundry Room

This room has space for custom built in linen closets.

Master Bedroom

Designing A Dream Home

As per Betty's request, the sleeping space needs to be large enough for a king size bed, two bedside tables, and a TV.  The master closet (not pictured) will house all of the clothes.

Designing A Dream Home

The beauty of planning out a custom forever home is that it is truly created for the client.  Whatever your heart desires can be done and built.  Although Betty has not had a chance to give me feedback yet, I believe we are well on our way to creating a home for her and her husband that they will be able to enjoy for many years to come.Sheri Bruneau Get It Together
