5 Easy Ways to Prepare for a Winter Move

Shovelling SnowThe subject of moving itself can be a stressful task to prepare for. Add in a mixture of cooler temperatures, slippery road conditions and unpredictable snowfalls and your stress level for your upcoming move can jump quickly. The best way to prepare yourself for a winter move is to be aware of the possible moving issues and follow these simple suggestions. Here are five easy ways to prepare for an upcoming move this winter season.

  1. Clear paths. Ensure that the entrance and paths to your home and driveway are clear of all snow and ice. Whether you are completing the move yourself or are hiring professional movers having a clear path to and from the home is essential to prevent the risk of any serious injuries.
  2. Keep winter supplies handy. Remember to not pack up any snow shovels or ice melt before the move. Having these winter supplies on hand will ensure that even if there is an unexpected snowfall you are prepared. The last thing you want to be doing on moving day is searching through packed up boxes for that bag of ice melt.
  3. Emergency contact list. Ensure you have all the necessary phone numbers with you before, during and after the winter move including roadside assistance contacts. These numbers are important to have with you just in case of any unexpected change in plans. Remember winter weather can change abruptly.
  4. Freezing Temperatures = Fragile Items. With colder temperatures not everything may make it through a winter move. For example, make sure liquids such as bottles of wine are packed properly. If something has the possibility of freezing we highly recommend packing it separately and keeping it in a warmer location such as a heated car.
  5. Safety first. Lastly, the most important thing we suggest when it comes to moving during winter months is your safety. We highly recommend hiring professional movers especially in the colder months because there are dangerous situations that may arise. For example, carrying large heavy items in cold conditions can be exhausting and tricky. Driving a large truck from one location to another in poor weather conditions should be executed by experienced drivers. By hiring experienced movers such as Highland Moving & Storage you can be reassured that your personal belongings will be relocated safely.
