Updating a built in bookcase: See my top 2 Options
This past week I have been involved in a discussion about updating a built in bookcase. It just so happens, I'm also working in a home where a built in bookcase is getting a major facelift. When it comes to updating a home, and you happen to have a built in bookcase, here are 2 possible options to update it.
Updating a built in bookcase
Paint using Contrasting Colours
I'm starting with this option because this is exactly what is being done to the home I'm working in (my project called 'Honey I'm Gone'). Here is a before picture:

We chose to spray/paint the majority of the bookcase the cream colour that their new kitchen cabinets are going to be (Benjamin Moore Mascarpone). In order to create a contrast, the back of the bookshelf was sprayed a darker, contrasting colour. That dark colour (Sherwin Williams Sealskin) was chosen as it is the dark colour that will be found when their honey oak flooring gets finished with the new Jacobean stain.

Here are some other examples of updating a built in bookcase:

Paint and wallpaper options
Another way of updating a built in bookcase is to use wallpaper for back of the bookcase. This is one sure-fire way to make that bookcase pop (depending on the wallpaper you choose).
Updating a built in bookcase
There are many more options to updating a built in bookcase (such as having it all painted the same colour) however the two options listed here stand to give you the biggest change. What you should, and need to take into consideration prior to updating yours, is to consider the rest of the home. Typically, built in bookcases tend to be a focal point or feature for the space they occupy. If you wish to have your home flow, I encourage you to take that into consideration when choosing colours and/or wallpaper.
